Qualitative Methodology Advanced Certificate

If you are a UB doctoral student (UB master’s students may seek permission to enroll) looking for advanced training in qualitative methods or looking to apply research skills to address specific institutional problems, this advanced certificate is for you. Our advanced certificate in qualitative methodology provides you with an advanced specialization in qualitative methodology within the social and human sciences-responding to the increased demand for research informed by qualitative methods across multiple institutional and organizational settings.

Program Learning Outcomes (PLOs)


1) Students will demonstrate knowledge and skills necessary to understand issues and debates around qualitative research methodology.

2) Students will demonstrate knowledge and skills necessary to understand the strengths and weaknesses of two major qualitative methodologies and their applicability with regard to particular research questions.

3) Students will demonstrate knowledge and skills so that they can conceptualize and actualize qualitative research in a broad range of research projects relevant to varying disciplines and field of study.

4) Students will demonstrate knowledge and skills necessary to conduct in-depth interviews, focus group interviews, and conduct participant observation in a range of sites relevant to the research.

5) Students will demonstrate knowledge and skills necessary to report the results of qualitative research through strong oral and written communication.

6) Students will demonstrate knowledge and skills necessary to align their theoretical framework with qualitative methodology, with particular attention to how theory is operationalized in their data

7) Students will demonstrate the knowledge and skills necessary to apply qualitative methods in professional practice in educational fields.
