Contemporary Music Performance DMA

Return to {$returnto_text} Return to: Department/Program

The University at Buffalo Department of Music possesses a unique history as a center for new and experimental music extending back to the 1960s. The proposed D.M.A. in Contemporary Music Performance draws upon this history in expanding our graduate program to include advanced performers with an interest in innovative new music. During the typical four-year course of study, students will participate in graduate seminars, receive studio lessons, and collaborate with faculty and students in UB’s Contemporary Ensemble. They will have the opportunity to premiere new work and collaborate with composers through the variety of programming sponsored by UB’s Robert and Carol Morris Center for 21st Century Music.

Prior to the advancement to degree candidacy, students will perform a minimum of two full recital programs containing significant solo and ensemble works composed since 1950 and pass a qualifying examination focused on their creative work as a performer - examining aspects of their repertoire and research interests. The dissertation requirement consists of a written thesis and lecture recital focused on a special topic of interest to the student and must be approved by the student’s doctoral committee and graduate advisor. The dissertation requirement seeks to connect aspects of contemporary music performance practice with original research and analysis.
