Civil Engineering MS

Our Civil, Structural and Environmental Engineering department has a strong international reputation for excellence in education and research. The 30-credit-hour Civil Engineering MS program provides students with the fundamental knowledge and technical skills to make a tangible impact on engineering practice to improve resilience in the natural and built environments.

Required Courses (6 credits)


Students will take at least one course from Group 1 and at lease one course from Group 2, totaling 6 credits. Any courses taken beyond required 6 credits will count as electives. 

Electives (18-24 credits)


Students can group elective courses to align with various suggested Focus Areas, as outlined in the examples below. For a full list of elective options, please see the departmental graduate handbook. For electives outside of CSEE or SEAS, students must seek permission from the Director of Graduate Studies.

Culminating Experience (0-6 credits)


Depending on the master’s culminating experience, students will take extra electives;  or register for 3 project credits; or up to 6 thesis credits. 

All-Course (0 credits)


  • All-course students take a comprehensive exam, administered on an ad-hoc basis.

Thesis (6 credits)
