Social Science-Interdisciplinary MS

The MS in Social Science-Interdisciplinary program offers students the freedom to design a specialized graduate curriculum, gain advanced training in research methods, and complete a capstone research project. Candidates combine research in a core social science concentration with related course work in a second social and behavioral science discipline, including anthropology, communicative disorders and sciences, economics, geography, history, linguistics, philosophy, political science, psychology, and/or sociology.

First Area of Social Sciences (15 credits)


  • 15 credit hours in an area of concentration selected from a Social Sciences department from:
    • Anthropology (APY)
    • Communication (COM)
    • Communicative Disorders & Science (CDS)
    • Economics (ECO)
    • Geography (GEO)
    • Linguistics (LIN)
    • Philosophy (PHI)
    • Political Science (PSC)
    • Psychology (PSY)
    • Sociology (SOC) 
  • Including at least one graduate course in research methods or statistics, below. 

Second Area of Social Sciences (15 credits)


  • 15 credit hours in a second area of concentration selected from a Social Sciences department from:
    • Anthropology (APY)
    • Communication (COM)
    • Communicative Disorders & Science (CDS)
    • Economics (ECO)
    • Geography (GEO)
    • Linguistics (LIN)
    • Philosophy (PHI)
    • Political Science (PSC)
    • Psychology (PSY)
    • Sociology (SOC) 
  • With prior approval up to 6 of these credits may be in area of Humanities, Natural Sciences or a Professional School.

Culminating Experience: Project (3 credits)


  • Register with your primary department for the appropriate culminating experience.
