Biophysics PhD

The biophysics program studies normal and abnormal protein structure and function-particularly membrane channel proteins-as well as the normal and abnormal function of cells, organs, and intact animals and humans, using state-of-the-art biophysical, computational, genomic, proteomic, and physiological techniques. There is special emphasis on the biophysical properties of the neural, cardiac and respiratory systems. The graduate program is known for the excellence of its research faculty and flexibility of the program.

Required Courses


A total of at least 72 credit hours are required for the Ph.D. degree. Of this total, at least 20 credit hours must be earned in formal didactic coursework, excluding Lab Rotations, Research and Thesis Guidance. Where appropriate, didactic course credits not exceeding 8 hours in total may be transferred from other graduate programs.

For students entering the Biophysical Sciences program from the interdisciplinary PhD Program in Biomedical Sciences (PPBS), the following courses are required:
