The Department of History offers intense academic training in a supportive, close-knit, open-minded environment. The department has particular strength in Asian, European, Latin American, and U.S. history, but its small size also encourages contacts across standard disciplinary boundaries. Our students are doing research in the history of the Atlantic world, disability studies, public history, immigration history, gay and lesbian studies, and other emerging fields. Our graduates hold positions in universities, museums and libraries across the country.

Major Area of Historical Study

In consultation with the Director of the MA Program, entering students decide upon a major area of historical study, typically drawn from the department’s areas of research focus: Race, Empire and Nation; Medicine, Disability and Science; Early Modern Societies; and the Twentieth Century World. The student may instead select a comparative focus or a more topically oriented approach.

Select:

2-3 500-level History (HIS) reading seminars. 1 of these must be outside the student’s major area of interest (e.g., a non-U.S. course for a U.S. historian)
1 600-level History (HIS) research seminar.

for a minimum total of 15 credits, based on the core course selection.
