The Mechanical Engineering PhD emphasizes original research and provides students with a strong background for employment in academic institutions, government laboratories and industrial research laboratories with a focus on mechanical engineering. The program provides a sound foundation in technical fundamentals with a broad-based curriculum in design and optimization; dynamics, control and mechatronics; fluid and thermal sciences; and bioengineering, computational and applied mechanics and materials. Modern, well-equipped laboratories are available to support timely research investigations.

Curriculum
The selection of the program of courses and the student’s dissertation research are under the supervision of a PhD program committee chaired by the student’s advisor.
Graduate Coursework (36-60 credits)
12 credits of formal coursework must be taken from the MAE department. This may be reduced with prior approval of the Director of Graduate Study. In consultation with the student’s academic advisor, students may take formal coursework from any of the following departments:
- Any School of Engineering graduate course
- Graduate offerings in Biological Sciences (BIO prefix)
- Chemistry (CHE prefix)
- Geological Sciences (GLY prefix)
- Mathematics (MTH prefix)
- Physics (PHY prefix)
A maximum of six credit hours of the PhD program requirements may be fulfilled by MAE 560 - MS Thesis or MAE 560 - MS Project.
Dissertation (12-36 credits)
Total Credit Hours: 72
3.0 Degree GPA required
