HIS 313LEC - 20th Century Europe

This course is designed to present a survey of major political, cultural, and social developments in Europe during the 20th century. In the first half of the semester, the course examines the concept of “modernity” and the rise of mass society. We look at the causes and the experience of the two world wars in Europe, analyze the rise of totalitarian ideologies and dictatorial states, and include the Holocaust. In the second half of the semester, we deal with the division of the European continent under the conditions of the Cold War, and examine the new cultural and intellectual dynamics within European society after 1960. Finally, this course will address the collapse of the Cold War order and the birth of new nation-states in Europe around 1990. Visual materials play a prominent role throughout the semester. EUR
