HIS 333LEC - Imperial Russia

This course surveys the history of the Russian empire from its origins to the fall of the Romanov dynasty in 1917. We examine the development of Russian autocracy and the enduring institution of serfdom. We explore the expansion of this vast empire and the varying strategies of participation and resistance of the state’s diverse people. Finally, we look at the emergence of revolutionary movements that threatened in the nineteenth century to topple the state. In the final weeks, we examine the revolutions of 1905 and 1917.
