SOC 321LEC - Race & Ethnicity

Racial inequality pervades the social history of the United States: From the enslavement of Africans to the Jim Crow laws of the Deep South to the high levels of racial residential segregation in American cities, the inequity associated with skin color remains a powerful force in determining life chances. In this course we will study the social forces that have formed the experiences of racial and ethnic groups in the U.S., and that have maintained the unequal nature of them. We will also study how issues of immigration and globalization provide a more thorough understanding of racial and ethnic dynamics in the U.S., and we will touch on whether or not these dynamics are applicable to other geo-political settings. This course is the same as SSC 325 and course repeat rules will apply. Students should consult with their major department regarding any restrictions on their degree requirements.
