PSC 385LEC - DOMINATION TO DEMOCRACY: CZECHIA

Czechia stands out as one of the biggest success stories among nations once dominated by Russia and the Soviet Union in terms of economic growth and democracy, especially in contrast with some of its neighbors. This course will consider both historical and contemporary issues in Prague and surrounding areas. Students will learn important theoretical concepts of Political Science related to protests, revolutions, federalism vs. autonomy, nationalism, transition to democracy, war, genocide, refugees, and ethnic and language minorities. The course will begin with readings and online lectures on this wide range of fascinating topics. Then these ideas will come to life as students travel to Prague, Karlovy Vary, Cesky Krumlov, and Terezin to visit museums, observe neighborhoods, see architectural wonders and works of art, and learn about Czech cuisine.
