ART 488LAB - Expanded Painting


The field of “Expanded Painting” may be understood as a broad set of practices that engage the traditions and discourse of painting, while moving beyond them. This graduate/advanced undergraduate course will include the following projects, drawing on examples from the 1960s to the present: Painting in Space; Conceptual Painting; Rules and Systems; Painting without Painting; and Collaboration. Students will study works by a range of related artists including: Sam Gilliam, Sarah Sze, Glenn Ligon, Tiffany Chung, Charles Gaines, On Kawara, Mark Bradford, Wade Guyton, Gelitin and assume vivid astro focus. The course will include readings and discussions by and about featured artists as well as writers such as Katy Siegel, David Joselit and Claire Bishop. It will also include at least one visit to a local art museum or gallery.
