AMS 265LEC - Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Social Justice in the United States

This course will use various disciplinary perspectives to examine the nature and meaning of race and Indigeneity in American society. These disciplinary lenses include history, sociology, indigeneity studies, gender and sexuality studies, literary criticism, and film studies. We seek to understand that race as it is presented to us is of recent origin, and that it emerges from strains of thought from Europe and North America over the course of roughly three centuries. We focus on race as a social and cultural category and the ways it shapes contemporary American life.
