APY 330LEC - Prehistory of Europe

How did people survive during the last Ice Age? How and why was Stonehenge built? How did metal fuel the development of social inequality and political hierarchy in Europe? In this course we will explore the answers to these questions and more. We will use the archaeological record to reconstruct the lives and societies of people living in Europe prior to 1200 BCE. We will also discuss how the technological and social transformations in European prehistory set the stage for the challenges we face in the present and future.Students will learn to evaluate archaeological evidence, assess the importance of theory in reconstructing prehistoric lifeways, and identify key sites, archaeologists, and artifacts in European prehistory.
