IDS 231SEM - Early Indigenous History to 1871


This course introduces students to the history of the original inhabitants of North America prior to European arrival to the end of U.S. treaty making and the beginning of the numbered treaties by the Canadian state, which both occurred in 1871. Students will learn about the diversity of indigenous peoples of Turtle Island (North America), the influence of colonization on indigenous peoples including issues of genocide, strategies of adaptation and survival, struggles for sovereignty, and cultural identity.
