MDI 312LEC - Multiscale Design of Materials This course introduces students to the foundations underlying multiscale design of materials, with a primary focus on mechanical behavior. The course not only explores the role of bonding, crystallography and microstructure on mechanical properties but also on hierarchical interactions ranging from atomistic through microstructural length scales, that govern both reversible and irreversible properties. Students are trained in the use of informatics methods coupled to the use of physics based modeling tools to identifying connections between atomistic scale phenomena, defects and microstructural effects that govern mechanical properties of materials.
