PSC 349SEM - Revolution and Culture in Paris

What is the difference between a revolution, civil war, coup détat, rebellion, riot, and protest? In this course, you will learn how to think about, analyze, and compare these types of political events (and more). Did you know that France has experienced countless episodes of civil unrest including hundreds of peasant revolts, innumerable urban riots and protests, and many rebellions and revolutions? Paris, a city with an over 2,200-year history, has been the geographical heart of many of these events in France. In Paris, Versailles and Chartres we will visit some of the artworks, monuments and buildings that shine a historical and artistic light on the cultural, political and economic changes that were associated with France¿s long history of periodic civil unrest. Finally, while in Paris, we will also learn about and experience the food and culture of France. Is it true, as former French-President De-Gaulle once said, that it is difficult to govern a country with 246 different types of cheese?
