Civil, Structural and Environmental Engineering Overview

The Civil, Structural and Environmental Engineering department offers Bachelor of Science degrees in Civil Engineering and Environmental Engineering. The department has also partnered with the School of Management to offer a five-year program leading to a combined bachelor’s degree in civil engineering and a master’s degree in business administration.

Civil engineers build societies. Their ability to translate complex ideas into concrete reality is the reason we have buildings, bridges, roads, railroads, subway systems, airports, water supply systems and other elements of physical infrastructure. Ancient engineering projects include the Great Wall of China, roads of the Roman Empire, Mayan temples and the Pyramids of Giza. Today, the public is familiar with civil engineering achievements such as the Golden Gate Bridge, Hoover Dam or New York City’s water supply system. Accomplishments such as these illustrate the diversity, scale, grandeur and functionality that is civil engineering. Current education and practice is expanding the realm of civil engineering to consider threats to our infrastructure due to fires and wind, as well as other longer term stresses such as climate change, with a greater emphasis on social impacts and sustainability. Because they often work in the public arena, civil engineers require broad technical training and usually must be licensed as professional engineers. Faculty in our department are at the cutting edge of civil engineering research and have had key contributions in some of the major projects around the world.

Environmental engineers work at the interface of society and the natural world to protect human health and the integrity of ecosystems. Top priorities include delivering safe drinking water, improving air quality, managing materials and waste, preventing and treating all forms of pollution, mitigating climate change, and restoring the Great Lakes and other natural water systems. Environmental engineers are increasingly concerned with promoting the values, principles, and practices of green and sustainable development. With interdisciplinary training that integrates environmental science, engineering, and policy, environmental engineers are uniquely positioned to address the traditional societal concerns of water and sanitation, as well as the global issues of environmental sustainability and climate change.

The Environmental Engineering BS program and the Civil Engineering BS program are accredited by the Engineering Accreditation Commission of ABET.

The curriculum is designed to meet program education objectives (PEOs) that describe the expected accomplishments of graduates within a few years after graduation. Graduates from BS Environmental Engineering program and the Civil Engineering BS program will:

  • Serve ethically with recognition of the diverse needs of society and the profession,
  • Become leaders in their profession,
  • Understand and advance the mission of their employer, and
  • Continue their professional development, including professional licensure, continuing education and/or graduate study.

Academic Advising

Students obtain academic advice and guidance from the academic advisors in the SEAS Office of Undergraduate Education (410 Bonner Hall) and from faculty advisors in their program of study. The SEAS Office of Undergraduate Education advises all students throughout their first two years of study. In the junior and senior years, students seek advisement primarily from departmental faculty advisors.
