Nursing Overview
The University at Buffalo School of Nursing baccalaureate programs are accredited by the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE). Our highly competitive programs are designed to prepare students for the expanding role of professional nurses and the challenging work environments of contemporary nurses. Here at the UB School of Nursing, our faculty experts cultivate students’ knowledge and confidence in diverse areas of professional nursing practice and patient care. Our school is committed to advancing diversity, equity and inclusion in research, education and practice. Whether your goal is to become an advanced practice nurse, a nurse anesthetist, a nurse scientist or a nurse leader, UB School of Nursing offers valuable opportunities to embark on or grow in your nursing career.
Designed to create a workforce of baccalaureate-prepared nurses, the traditional nursing curriculum integrates biomedical and social sciences to prepare students for upper-division study that incorporates nursing science with clinical practice experience. This ensures that students acquire a professional education that prepares them to provide compassionate, safe and quality health care throughout the health care spectrum. Upper-division coursework will include an emphasis on nursing practice, health promotion, informatics, evidence-based research, health systems policy and care coordination across populations. The concept-based curriculum will afford students the ability to use higher order thinking to make clearer connections between theory and practice. It will also improve graduates’ ability to translate knowledge to practice in multiple settings when caring for patients at various stages of wellness and illness across the lifespan. Students in this option will complete all required courses in the nursing major in a sequence that prepares those to take the National Council Licensure Examination (NCLEX-RN) to become a registered nurse.
The Accelerated Nursing Program uses a Concept-Based Curriculum (CBC) as a method of delivering ever-expanding amounts of content in an easier way. Students will be able to use higher order thinking to make clear connections between theory and practice. The CBC will also improve graduates’ ability to translate knowledge to practice in multiple settings when caring for patients at various stages of wellness and illness across the lifespan. Upper division coursework will include an emphasis on nursing practice, health promotion, informatics, evidence-based research, health systems policy and care coordination across populations. The accelerated second-degree option offers the undergraduate nursing curriculum as an intensive, full time, 12 month program designed for students who have already completed a bachelor’s degree in a field outside of nursing. Students selecting this option will complete all required courses in the nursing major in a sequence that provides accelerated progression and, upon completion, are prepared to take the National Council Licensure Examination (NCLEX-RN) to become a registered nurse. The program admits students once per year.
The RN-BS program, ranked among the best online programs by U.S. News & World Report, is designed specifically for nurses who have already successfully completed a community college (associate’s degree) program. The Rn to BS program builds upon knowledge and experience of registered nurses, preparing them to provide the necessary leadership to advance quality of care, patient safety and health services in an evolving health care system. The program is delivered remotely, asynchronously and can be completed in 12 or 24 months. The program admits students for spring and fall.
