Asian Studies Overview
The continent of Asia, home to some of the most diverse societies and cultures on the planet, has held and continues to hold preeminence in today’s global affairs. Its rich histories, its economic powerhouses, and its deep religious and political traditions have shaped our understanding of our past, as well as our current and future aspirations. We live in an age in which major world cultures that were formerly isolated to a particular geographic region are now recognized to have truly international, cross-cultural reach. Studying the civilizations of Asia, the diverse and fascinating cultures of its people, empowers our students to gain the skill and knowledge needed to embark on fulfilling careers and to build deeply meaningful lives.
Department of Linguistics offers several languages of Asia. These include Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Arabic, Hindi/Urdu, and Sanskrit.. Undergraduate minors may be elected in these languages. Credits earned through study abroad in Asia, language study, non-language classes, and graduate research can count toward Asian Studies major requirements.
