The Department of Biotechnical and Clinical Laboratory Sciences offers two Bachelor of Science degrees: Biotechnology and Medical Laboratory Science (formerly titled, Medical Technology BS).
At UB’s Biotechnology Program, students receive a high level of one-on-one training and faculty interaction that is exceptional. The Biotechnology Program is the only lab-based training program of its kind at UB, preparing students for a career in lab-based research or post-graduate studies. Our unique program of intensive, applied laboratory-based training courses allows our graduates to master an array of practical laboratory skills. UB’s Biotechnology Program incorporates concepts taught with functional application of theory, in an intensive laboratory setting, emphasizing real-life proficiency in the practice as well as the theory of biotechnology. The high level of hands-on laboratory training received in our program enables students to be prepared, upon graduation, to be immediately competitive in the biotechnology job market. Since our coursework focuses on skills and comprehension for a wide variety of laboratory techniques, graduates from our program are also exceptionally well-prepared for graduate studies or professional programs.
Medical Laboratory Science, also known as clinical laboratory science, provides the training necessary to perform laboratory-based tests used by physicians to diagnose, treat and prevent disease. It is a field of applied biology and chemistry and is appropriate for students interested in the delivery of healthcare services. The course of study is interdisciplinary, drawing heavily upon the resources of both the natural sciences and the health sciences faculties. Once admitted into the program, students spend three academic semesters at the university taking program courses covering the areas of biochemistry, immunology, instrumentation, clinical chemistry, microbiology, blood banking, hematology, coagulation, parasitology, mycology, urinalysis, biomolecular techniques, medical genetics, and management. The last semester of the senior year is spent rotating through hospital laboratories and affiliated hospitals with the program.
Program Accreditation and Outcomes
The UB BS Medical Laboratory Science (formerly titled Medical Technology) program received 5-years continuing accreditation from the National Accrediting Agency for Clinical Laboratory Science (NAACLS) in 2019.

Program graduates are eligible for the American Society of Clinical Pathologists (ASCP) Board of Certification (BOC) as a Medical Laboratory Scientist (MLS). Program outcomes include the percentage of graduates who pass the ASCP BOC and obtain employment as an MLS within one year of completing the program. Recent outcomes include:

Academic Advising
Students in their first two years will work with the Jacobs School Undergraduate Education office to create an academic plan, discuss course selection and workload management. Advisor assignments are determined by student last name. During the third and fourth years, students will be advised by Dan LaRosa, dlarosa@buffalo.edu in the department.
The purpose of advisement is to provide students with guidance in course sequencing and selection. In-person advisement is required in your first year at the University to develop an appropriate academic plan to facilitate timely graduation.
