Seven Linguistics Electives (21 credits)


At least four elective courses (12 credits) must be 300/400 level. LIN 496TUT - Internship  may count only once, for 3 credits.

NYS Education Department requires students in ESOL teacher preparation programs meet the following requirement, which may be double-dipped with the Pathways UB Curriculum requirements.

  • 12 credits study of a world language other than English (i.e. American Sign Language, Chinese, French, Spanish, etc.)

Total Credit Hours Required represents the minimum credits needed to complete this program, and may vary based on a number of circumstances. This should not be used for financial aid purposes.

Academic Requirements


Minimum GPA of 2.000 in the major.

To progress to the graduate portion of the program, students must maintain a 3.000 GPA, earn a “C” grade or higher in content courses (courses in the undergraduate major); earn a “B-” or better in all education coursework (courses that begin with CEP, ELP, and LAI), and complete an interview in the Office of Educator Preparation. Students must complete these progression points by March of year three of the bachelor’s program to be eligible to register for graduate level coursework. No formal application is required for graduate school.

Learning Outcomes


Upon successful completion of all requirements, the student will:

  • demonstrate a beginner-level understanding of the basic concepts associated with phonetics, phonology, morphology, syntax, semantics, and pragmatics and also apply basic analytical methods from each of these domains to analyze linguistic data.
  • demonstrate an intermediate-level understanding of key concepts in the study of sound systems and methods of phonetic and phonological analysis. Students will apply these methods and concepts to produce and transcribe speech sounds and analyze sound systems.
  • demonstrate an intermediate-level understanding of key concepts in the study of word and sentence structure and methods of morphological and syntactic analysis. Students will apply these methods and concepts to analyze word and sentence structure.
  • identify ways that different kinds of meaning are encoded linguistically and apply multiple methods for analyzing meaning from a major subfield of linguistics such as semantics, sociolinguistics, or linguistic anthropology.
  • will apply tools from several domains of linguistic analysis to understand and analyze the linguistic patterns of a specific language.

Students in the combined program will complete the learning outcomes of the Linguistics BA. In addition, graduates of the Linguistics BA/English for Speakers of Other Languages EdM program will:

  • Demonstrate subject specific content expertise that supports effective teaching in the field.
  • Create inclusive learning environments to meet individual differences in a caring, culturally responsive, and professional manner.
  • Construct relevant and rigorous curricula that includes critical assessment of student learning outcomes.
  • Design, develop, and evaluate learning experiences that maximize the use of digital and interactive technologies.
  • Promote the application of research and evidence based practices in diverse settings throughout their teaching careers.
  • Remain intellectually curious, continually updating their knowledge and skills to ensure ongoing excellence in teaching.
