Academic Requirements


To graduate, the student must have earned an overall GPA of 2.500 in CDS courses. CDS courses with a grade of less than C- will not be acceptable for the departmental average requirement and must be retaken for a grade of C- or better. Students may not elect S/U grading in CDS courses.

To progress to the graduate portion of the program, students must maintain a 3.000 GPA, earn a “C” grade or higher in content courses (courses in the undergraduate major); earn a “B-” or better in all education coursework (courses that begin with CEP, ELP, and LAI), and complete an interview in the Office of Educator Preparation. Students must complete these progression points by March of year three of the bachelor’s program to be eligible to register for graduate level coursework. No formal application is required for graduate school.

Program Honors


The Honors Program allows qualified seniors the opportunity to engage in a year-long research project in a single lab. The lab is selected by the student to fit his/her interests in the field. A mentor is chosen to work closely with the student during the year to guide the student in writing and orally presenting the required senior thesis. Students complete CDS 497 . The thesis must be submitted and approved by the thesis advisor and co-advisor. Students must also meet the remaining criteria outlined in the Academic Honors policy. Students who successfully complete the honors program and meet the criteria will have the appropriate notation on their official transcript.

Program Distinction


A student in this major is eligible for Program Distinction upon degree conferral if the criteria are met. Criteria are found under Academic Honors in the Policy and Procedure section of this Catalog. Program Distinction is noted on the official transcript.

Learning Outcomes


Demonstrate knowledge of biological sciences, physical science, mathematics, social and behavioral sciences, and basic communication.

  • Students will demonstrate knowledge of Biological sciences, physical science, mathematics, Social and behavioral sciences, technical skills, writing, linguistics.
  • Students will demonstrate knowledge across the life span of basic human communication processes for individuals of various social backgrounds. Students will demonstrate fundamental knowledge of speech language, hearing, voice, swallowing, and balance in typical populations.
  • Students will demonstrate knowledge concerning disorders of speech, language, hearing, balance, voice, and swallowing.  They will acquire basic knowledge about diagnosis and treatment of speech, language, hearing, voice, swallowing, and balance disorders.
  • Students will be able to identify appropriate and meaningful communication strategies for conveying clinical information in written and oral forms to clients and families.
  • Students will be able to understand and appreciate current appropriate professional ethical conduct, including issues related to professional credentialing.
  • Students will be able to discuss current issues related to professional credentialing at state and national levels

In addition, graduates of the Speech and Hearing Science BA/Early Childhood EdM program will:

  • Complete intensive clinical education experiences in collaboration with Western New York pre K-6 schools in rural, suburban and urban settings, while learning the nuances of the teaching profession.
  • Gain the skills, expertise and confidence to implement evidence-based practice in the classroom and co-teach alongside an expert teacher in a one-year residency.
