Course Requirements


Diversity through Sociology Core (3 credits)


Paper and Diversity Statement


Students must also:

  1. submit a paper written in response to one of two paper prompts, and
  2. submit a diversity statement for an employer

Total Credits Required for Micro-Credential: 9


Academic Requirements


Students must complete all requirements with a grade of B or higher.

Learning Outcomes


  • Think critically and sociologically about controversial contemporary and historical topics stemming from issues such as gender, race, class, ethnicity, religion, disability, and immigration in American society.
  • Identify the theories, methods and findings of key research conduced by sociologists studying diversity
  • Understand the relationship between social structure, culture, and individual/collective agency.
  • Describe and assess how discrimination and oppression impact the  lives of people of color and other marginalized populations in the United States.
  • Describe how categories of diversity intersect or connect with each other, creating complex identities and perspectives.
  • Analyze how categories of difference create both institutional inequalities and advantages.
  • Evaluate the effectiveness of policies intending to increase or reduce diversity.
  • Apply sociological concepts from the diversity coursework in writing a diversity statement for an employer.
