Admission Criteria

Current UB students seeking admission to the Italian minor should complete the College of Arts and Sciences Major/Minor Change Request Form.

Elementary & Intermediate Italian (11-16 credits)*

Select one of the following Introductory Italian sequences:

Sequence 1:
ITA 101LEC - Elementary Italian 1st Semester Credits: 5
ITA 102LEC - Elementary Italian 2nd Semester Credits: 5
ITA 151LEC - Intermediate Italian 1st Semester Credits: 3
ITA 152LEC - Intermediate Italian 2nd Semester Credits: 3
Sequence 2:
ITA 111DIS - Elementary Italian I Credits: 3
ITA 112DIS - Elementary Italian II Credits: 3
ITA 201DIS - Intermediate Italian I Credits: 3
ITA 202DIS - Intermediate Italian II Credits: 3

Italian Core (12 credits)

ITA 207LEC - Italian Conversation & Composition Credits: 3
ITA 322SEM - Advanced Communication for Students of Italian Credits: 3 (which also fulfills the Communication Literacy / CL2 requirement)
Two ITA 300- or 400-level electives

Notes

*Students are required to complete Introductory Language Core courses unless some or all are waived by the Department based on demonstrated proficiency. Students with absolutely no prior instruction in Italian may enroll in ITA 111. The introductory sequence consists of four courses: Elementary I, Elementary II, Intermediate I, and Intermediate II

*In contrast, students who do not need the introductory, refresher, or intermediate courses may, with the permission of the Department, begin immediately at the 200 level. Students should consult the RLL website for placement guidelines and e-mail the Department with any questions.

*These totals may vary depending on the level at which the student begins study at UB. Students demonstrably prepared to begin at the 200 level are deemed to have satisfied the Elementary and Intermediate requirements, and for them the total credits required for the minor will be reduced.

Three courses for the major may fulfill the UB Curriculum Global Pathway requirement through the Language and Culture track. Alternatively, courses for the major may help fulfill the Global Reflection track or the International Experience track of the Global Pathway. Total Credits Required for Minor: 23-28

Total Credit Hours Required represents the minimum credits needed to complete this program, and may vary based on a number of circumstances. This chart should not be used for financial aid purposes.

Academic Requirements

Minimum GPA of 2.000 overall.
Minimum GPA of 2.000 in all Italian coursework

Transfer Credit Policy

At least 50% of required credits for the minor be completed via Italian courses taken on campus.

Program Distinction

A student in this major is eligible for Program Distinction upon degree conferral if the criteria are met. Criteria are found under Academic Honors in the Policy and Procedure section of this Catalog. Program Distinction is noted on the official transcript.
