Admission Criteria

Current UB students seeking admission to the Classics Minor- Classical Languages and Literature minor should complete the College of Arts and Sciences Major/Minor Change Request Form.

Course Requirements

Classics Minor - Classical Languages and Literature Core (12 credits)

Four 300/400 level courses in Greek and/or Latin:

GR 301LEC - Ancient Greek Language and Culture III Credits: 3
GR 302LEC - Ancient Greek Language and Culture IV Credits: 3
GR 401LEC - Homer and the Greek Epic Credits: 3
GR 402LEC - Herodotus and Selections From Greek Poetry Credits: 3
LAT 301LEC - Latin Language and Culture III Credits: 3
LAT 302LEC - Latin Language and Culture IV Credits: 3
LAT 401LEC - Ovid Credits: 3
LAT 402LEC - Latin Lyric Poetry Credits: 3

Two Electives (6 credits)

Two CL courses or approved courses in other departments.

Total Credit Hours Required represents the minimum credits needed to complete this program, and may vary based on a number of circumstances. This chart should not be used for financial aid purposes.

Academic Requirements

Only courses at the 200 level or higher may be used to satisfy the requirements for a classics minor.
Students must have a grade point average of 2.000 to be accepted for the minor.

Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of all requirements, the student will have knowledge to:

Gain knowledge of the fundamental elements of Classics, through study of the languages, classes in Greek and Roman history, art and archaeology, and culture
Develop their ability to read and analyze texts closely, whether in translation or in the original language
Demonstrate their ability to write papers, drawing on research tools in the various subdisciplines - texts, documents, physical remains, scholarly articles and books, theoretical approaches and digital tools.
Understand the legacy of the Greek and Roman world, its historical importance in our own culture
Be encouraged to supplement classroom learning with experience abroad, whether as part of an archaeological expedition or study abroad program
