Admission Criteria

Current UB students seeking admission to the Chinese minor should complete the College of Arts and Sciences Major/Minor Change Request Form.

Course Requirements

Introductory Courses (5-10 credits)*

CHI 101LEC - First-Year Chinese Credits: 5 AND
CHI 102LEC - First-Year Chinese Credits: 5 OR
CHI 111DIS - First-Year Chinese 1st Semester Credits: 6 AND
CHI 112DIS - First-Year Chinese 2nd Semester Credits: 3
CHI 104LEC - Transitional First-Year Chinese Credits: 5 OR
OR
CHI 114DIS - First-Year Chinese for Heritage Learners Credits: 6

Chinese Core (13 credits)

CHI 201LEC - Second-Year Chinese Credits: 4
CHI 202LEC - Second-Year Chinese Credits: 4
CHI 301LEC - Third-Year Chinese Credits: 3
One Chinese language or Chinese language related course.

Notes

*Application should be made when the student has completed the introductory courses or during the semester in which they will be completed.

Some students, based on demonstrated proficiency in Chinese, may begin their study of Chinese at the 102/112, 201, 202, or higher level. The lower level courses that they do not take will not count toward the minor and must be replaced with other Chinese language or Chinese language-related courses to bring the total number of courses to six and the total number of credits to at least 18.

Learning Outcomes

By completing all the requirements, students will acquire a high level of proficiency in Mandarin Chinese listening, speaking, reading, and writing. Students will also develop a nuanced knowledge and understanding of Chinese culture, a major force in politics, media, the global economy, and cross-cultural approaches to sustainable development.
