Nuclear Engineering Minor

Learning Outcomes


  • Gain a basic understanding of nuclear science, engineering, and principles of nuclear fission.
  • Explore how nuclear engineering principles are applied in various fields, such as medicine and power generation.
  • Apply fundamental nuclear concepts to solve open-ended problems in various applications.
  • Understand the fundamentals of nuclear reactor design, operation, and management.
  • Analyze risk factors, environmental management, and waste management related to nuclear materials. 

Admission Criteria


  • One of the following:
  1. Academic good standing within a major within the School of Engineering and Applied Sciences.
  2. Satisfaction of the core course requirement for admission to an engineering major. See our Admission to SEAS for Current UB Students documentation for more information.
  • Minimum overall and UB GPA of 2.500

Current students wishing to add the minor in Nuclear Engineering, submit the School of Engineering and Applied Sciences Major/Minor Change Application. See the complete School of Engineering and Applied Sciences Admissions Policies for details.

Academic Requirements


  • 2.000 minimum GPA in minor courses.
  • A maximum of three courses from your UB Curriculum, major(s), and/or other minors can be applied towards the Nuclear Engineering Minor. Anything beyond three shared courses will need to be excluded by your Academic Advisor.
