Exercise and Nutrition Sciences Overview

Exercise science is the scientific study of how human movement influences health, fitness, performance and disease prevention. Nutrition science explores the complex relationship between the body, nutrients and health. Our department combines these disciplines to offer a broad understanding of the human body, including physiological, biomechanical and nutritional factors.

The ENS department offers two undergraduate degrees: a BS in Exercise Science and a BS in Nutrition Science. UB’s exercise science and nutrition science programs are uniquely positioned within the School of Public Health and Health Professions. Undergraduate students learn in a multidisciplinary environment focusing on improving the health of individuals and populations.

Students in the Exercise Science BS program select among the following concentrations: Applied Exercise Physiology, Pre-Athletic Training, Pre-Health Professions and Pre-Physical Therapy. Please review the program website for descriptions of the concentrations. Exercise science undergraduate students will develop a strong foundation in the health sciences, including chemistry, physics, anatomy, physiology, exercise physiology, and nutrition through rigorous coursework.

The Nutrition Science BS undergraduate curriculum includes the foundational sciences of chemistry, biochemistry, and biology as well as nutrition courses in human health and disease. The program provides flexibility in the final year to specialize in exercise science, sport nutrition, or public health. Students will be exposed to the interdisciplinary nature of the field of nutrition science. Students will gain the knowledge and skills necessary to understand the complex interactions between nutrition and human health and to promote health and wellness through optimal nutrition. Upon completion of the degree, students will have met the requirements to apply to a Future Education Model Graduate Program (FG) accredited by the Accreditation Council in Nutrition and Dietetics (ACEND) and continue on to become a Registered Dietitian Nutritionist (RDN). They will also have the prerequisites for advanced study in a variety of health and health-related professions.
