Music Overview
The Department of Music’s degree programs provide students an excellent foundation in music performance, composition, and scholarly study. They also provide a gateway for the study of arts management, conducting, electronic music, music education, jazz, and even piano technical service.
The MusB degree is focused on performance on a musical instrument, including eight semesters of music lessons that culminate in an undergraduate recital. The BA in Music has greater flexibility, enabling students to concentrate on performance, composition, scholarly research, or some combination thereof. (It’s flexibility also facilitates double majors.) All BA students conclude their degree with a music internship that gives them the opportunity to work alongside professional musicians or organizations in Buffalo. The Departments the three music minors enable students to complement their primary degree with general music study, or a concentration in jazz or music performance.
Outside of the classroom, UB music students can participate in our large singing groups, or the UB chamber singers; the concert band, wind ensemble, or marching band; the UB jazz ensemble, or one of our jazz combos; the UB Symphony Orchestra; or any of a great variety of chamber music groups, which range from the Open String Ensembles, groups for guitarists, and even a group dedicated to Brazillian choro. While some ensembles are open to all UB students, others require an audition.
All UB music majors and minors are eligible to take lessons in performance or composition with the Department’s distinguished faculty. (Non-majors can take lessons as well, though they must audition.) Students taking lessons and certain UB music courses have access to the Department’s excellent facilities, which include rehearsal halls and practice rooms equipped with pianos.
