Admission Criteria


Students wishing to pursue this major must meet Exercise Science BS–Pre-Health concentration/Nutrition MS Admission Criteria 

Course Requirements


Pre-Health Professions Concentration Electives (9 credits)


At least 6 credits from ES, NTR or PUB

Graduate Nutrition Core (36 credits)

*    NTR 600 Required for students taking Comp Exam or Project Option.  NOT required for students in the Thesis track.

Academic Requirements


Students must select the Pre-Health concentration. Students must maintain an overall undergraduate GPA of 3.000 to be eligible for admission to the graduate portion of the program. Students are required to maintain an overall GPA of 3.000 in the graduate portion of the program and achieve a minimum grade of B- in all required graduate courses. Students that do not maintain a minimum overall undergraduate GPA of 3.000 will not be allowed to continue in the combined BS/MS program but may continue in the BS degree program.

Retention Criteria: Students who fail to meet the minimum academic requirements for the BS/MS program will not be allowed to continue in the combined program but have the option to continue in the BS in ES degree program. Refer to BS in Exercise Science program for academic requirements for the undergraduate program.

This combined degree program does NOT allow students to be eligible to become a Registered Dietician Nutritionist (RDN). Students seeking the RDN credential will need to complete the prerequisites for the Clinical Nutrition MS. The Nutrition Science BS is a good option for students seeking the RDN credential as it allows students to complete the prerequisites as part of the undergraduate degree. Please speak with your academic advisor for assistance.

Program Distinction


A student in this major is eligible for Program Distinction upon degree conferral if the criteria are met. Criteria are found under Academic Honors in the Policy and Procedure section of this Catalog. Program Distinction is noted on the official transcript.

Learning Outcomes


The BS/MS in Exercise Science and Nutrition prepares graduates for entry-level and managerial positions in the areas of fitness, health and wellness, prevention of injury and rehabilitation through exercise and physical activity. Students learn to enhance health and wellness through the principles of exercise and nutrition science.

Skills gained in this program include: Managing, organizing and meeting deadlines, analyzing, critical thinking, teaching, interpreting, communicating, persuading/influencing, coordinating, planning, problem solving, and coaching people.

Upon successful completion of all requirements, the student will be able to:

  • Demonstrate comprehensive knowledge of essential principles and vocabulary of exercise science.
  • Apply scientific knowledge to improve human health, fitness and performance. 
  • Demonstrate entry-level skills as an exercise science practitioner.
  • Demonstrate professionalism and commitment to evidence-based practice and prudent decision-making skills.
  • Display competence in oral, written and digital communication skills. 
  • Demonstrate effective team work and interpersonal skills in working with clients, supervisors and professional colleagues.
  • Demonstrate critical thinking and analytical skills to a variety of scenarios relevant to practice as an exercise science professional.
